Ahh, basketball try-outs are tomorrow and I'm completely oblivious to what the coaches are looking for (endurance? skills?). I really (desperately) want to make the team, so does anyone have any tips?

I was on my high school team last year. Of course, everybody will tell you that a coach looks for good hustle and someone who is a team player. While this is true, there are more important things. Most tryouts will have 3-4 standout players that are obvious choices. The hard part for coaches is picking out that bottom half of the roster. Three things attract a coach the most; A physical specimen, good ballhandling and good shooting. Players who are physically appealing, but unskilled, MUST show a willingness to learn and change. Overall, coaches look for players who have already mastered fundamentals and show a good grasp of court sense. Make good passes during tryouts and be attentive. Be fluid and try not to commit turnovers during scrimmages. Do your best during drills. That's about all you can do since you have so little time to prepare. Be confident but not arrogant and you will make the team!(And if you don't, that's ok, number 23 didn't make it the firt time either!)

A lot depends on your size and athleticism (things you have little-no control over) but there will always be a place on any team if you have the following hardwood skills:

1. Ball handling (can't stress this enough, every player on the court needs to be able to move WITH the basketball)
2. Defensive awareness (know how to move your feet, know the geometry of good defense)
3. Good touch (not necessarily a great jumper, but can you put the ball through the hoop from most spots in the offensive set)
4. Most importantly...Hustle!!!

They're going to look for your attitude, how much you hustle, how teachable you are, and also how much skills you have. It's important to have skills to play with, but on the 9th grade team, finding someone how hustles, get rebounds, dives on the floor for the ball, and who is positive, will go a long way into making the team. Definitely will want to introducing yourself after the tryouts so they will know who you are.

different coaches look for different things but these are the main things. also dont get down on ur self or give ur self a hard time b/c they WILL see that so just always keep pushing even if u miss every shot or whatever. and pay attention and say yes sir always or maam. good luck with tryouts!!

they are looking for teamwork, agressiveness, speed and endurance. Run like hell and keep up with the drills...don't complain because you will be weeded out immediately. When doing defensive drills, be aggressive, don't be scared of the other players. Have lots of team spirit, and encourage your fellow teammates, don't hate on them. Give moral support and listen to the coaching staff when they tell you to "do this drill this way,..."
You'll do fine...

it is good to have endurance, skills and you have to make sure you let them know that you want to be there. Hustle while you doing everything, put in a little more effort into what you do when you are trying out for a team. I think you will be okay

team players - work well with others
good skills - ball handling - stamina -

a team of 5 superlative show offs was beaten soundly by a little country team with only 5 high school boys on the team - because they played together - (no substitutes)
