Your right - anyone who thinks the media present a clear picture of world events is very sadly misled.
Unfortunatly, the media is big business and the key is to sell, sell, sell - even if it means misrepresenting or distorting the truth. It's incredible how many people are willing to accept everything at face value, even forming their own opinions based on the shallow imitation of fact they are presented with.
Prime examples of this are the recent (in the UK) spate of dog attacks on children. In the summer there were reports almost every day of another dog attack for the best part of 2 weeks - was there something supernatural going on? No - just one attack hit the headlines so everyone else wanted their 'hot topic' attack. Everyday events suddenly found their way onto the front page where a few weeks earlier they would not have even made the paper at all.
Another instance is the so called 'knife crime epidemic' Knife crime has been at an average level for 12 years according to the office of national statistics - but again, it's a hot topic, it sells papers and it distorts the truth.
It's only a few months since we were all about to die from Bird Flu? Has the impending end of humanity beed cancelled?
When the media give more attention to which footballers wives therapists dog has been seen at some celebrity reality show launch than actually reporting real events then something is seriously wrong.
And if people read this cr*p and think they are informed then something is very seriously wrong.

the news--aka- the print/media Business conglomerates is not information provided to the public as set froth by our founding fathers inclusion of "freedom" of the press statuates.
media/print outfits TODAY are simply business.
They seek profits/ratings AND because of who they are owned by can and do scew their
stories/headlines" as they choose.
They select the content and if caught in a lie
such as an "unnamed" source states that xxx they are "protected."..and simply complain that they were misinformed.....
Its a farce.. polls can be commissioned to selectively phrase questions to produce a desired result...pundits are allowed to create their own interpretations...i.e.
exit poll..."Are you concerned about the soldiers in Iraq?"
yes answer is translated into a popular demand that the troops withdraw as the polls" indicate great concern for the war in Iraq"
What we (the public) really need is verifiable facts, actual quotes, reports/studies should always include the organization that funded the "report/study", the sample size, whether the data has been verified by an independant entity.or other scientists..
It wont happen even tho they should be treated like any other business...held responsible (i.e. get sued for ) the damage they inadvertantly cause by just an unfortunate problem with verifying the data before we announced it to the world...
The use of these instant guest "experts/anylists? who blather on about an breaking event when they have no info on what occurred is beyond absurd...
the media/press create their sensation especially in the politics since the more dissention, the greater the ratings ...
They all talk about the ethics of journalists ,need to verify etc yet they all know they drive the story and can make/break the publicks perception of anyone anytime simply by selective "content"... that

I am English and have lived in Italy, I currently live in Switzerland. I have always been amazed at the difference between the same story in a British, American, Italian and a Swiss paper. The best thing to do is read a lot, then make up your own mind. Too many people are the intellectual slaves of The Sun.

As an American living in Vietnam I see the people in America watching the news as a bunch of sheep being led to slaughter. You believe all the propaganda and let Bush lead the Americans into a war that is a no win situation. If he had done his homework he would never got involved in Iraq. This is going to make the the whole region unstable. America lost in Vietnam and what did they learn? nothing and until America is a third world county it will keep on making wars. Today America is the most hated nation in the world.

Money drives this busines. They can't afford to p**s off the wrong people. Very little of our news is even important. There is a lot going on in the world.
Best places today for current events is The Daiky Show, The Colbert Report, Etc.

the news is decided by what happens around the world...people cannot trust news because usually news agencies challenge eachother on how quick they are going to give the information to the public. sometimes the news agencies are linked to political parties and only favourable opinion of a particular party is shown on the channel.it is better not to believe what is told..it is better to do your own inference...and that will take an awful lot of time...

The news is so biast and controlled by people who are trying to influence us in a certain direction, sometimes subtle sometimes it is so blatant.
You only have to look at the Isreali / Lebanon Isreal / Palastinian conflict to see this.
Whenever Isrealis are killed by whatever means they are named, thier familys are shown being sad etc. But if a market full of Arabs is wiped out by a missile fired by an Apache then its only mentioned in a minor way.
(Im not supporting any side by the way jsut making a point)

Generally members of the public create the news by phoning or emailing in what is happening in their own area. Who decides if it is relevant or acceptable for the public is no doubt down to editors and lawyers (when a matter involving police).
1. Define sane.
2. Would you prefer to be ignorant of everything ?

All news has some form of bias, its up to you how you interpret it and understand the information. To gain in further understanding of the whats going on in the world try watching various news channels and reading different tabloids.
