sometimes we know our children so well that we read their minds and respond to them before they need to speak. If he just points, or grunts or whines say "use your words" then WAIT until he communicates. Also read to him every day. Speak complete sentences to him, not baby talk. There's nothing wrong with baby talk but in his case he needs to learn proper language skills.

Make sure he doesn't have a hearing problem. My oldest child had excessive earwax due to a milk allergy that gave him ear infections. He may be repeating only what he can hear.

My little nephew was tha same exact way he understands everything I tell himhe just can't say it. How i did it with my nephew is i would get like sweet tarts and show it to him then go to something I want him to say and tell he for example"say juice" and you will get a piece of candy or anything he liked as a reward would work but what kid doesn't like candy. he would say the words but not so clearly but enough for you to understand and it was so wierd he recently turned 4 and it's like a light bulb turned on in his head now I tell him he'll get candy if he shuts-up lol.I wouldn't worry to much just give him time he'll come around if you give him things without him having to ask your contributing to he's silence tell him to say what he wants he might fuss but it's for the better if he wants a cookie he can't point at the jar and get it you have to show it to him and tell him to say cookie if he makes alot of attempts and can't say it don't worry just do it everytime he wants a cookieand eventually he'll say i quicker because he'll know he gets his cookie faster. I hope it helps you and him.

If he responds to language, responds to affection, and shows appropriate interest in his surroundings, the best thing you can do is be patient and don't worry. It sounds like he is your first child (if he's not - he's probably just letting his siblings communicate for him); we all worry about every developmental stage of our first.
