If you are docked in a harbour then check with the harbour authorities as they may have a wireless network available for use at a price.
A public wireless link if available. Nearly all charge but there is an open network which is getting bigger all the time.
Other than that then there is Satelite which is expensive but it is comming down in price BUT you will need some special tracking hardware and software to counteract the boats movements.
Microwave, this is only possible if there is a public microwave link in the area and you have line of sight from the boat.
GPRS/3G - Mobile phone. This is becomming more popular for mobile internet as 3G offers a decent connection speed. You will need to check with your operator and sign up for an internet account. The price is usually quite good on a pay per use scheme.

Hi. when I lived on a sailboat, I had a regular land line and connected that way. Another way you can connect is with a cell phone if you have one. Of course, there is sattelite and WebTV. Your best bet is cell phone. you will probably want to limit your internet useage to free miinutes.... charged as calls...... Why don't you get a phone? I always had on on my boat. You cannot connect via vhf radio. but you can have fun with it. My friend uses his cell in his camper. I would get a land line. they all have jacks at your dock box and it is just a regular phone. If for some reason you don't want that.... you can get WEB TV but may need phone line for that. OR.... your cell phone and you would just call your cell phone provider and they will tell you how to do it... or you can use your cell as your computer but the typing gets hard....... just get a regular land line. Once I forgot to disconnect. Phone went adios and had to get another......I also used a regular land line at anchor setting down the phone wire myself with scuba gear from a friend's dockbox.... look at dockbox, probably already has phone jack..... Where are you.... love living on water... nmilover

GSM technology:
---------------------
GPRS, EDGE, UMTS (in the order of slow to fast) are your options. Should be available from your phone operators. You can get cards that fit a PCMCIA on a laptop and just work. Take care if the walls and room of the boat are out of metal: you'll have trouble getting anything to work that does not have an external antenna.

Satellite technology:
------------------------
You'll need a VSAT 2-way link (not just like TV where you receive, but you also need to transmit to the satellite.)

The bandwidth you have will be OK, however the delay caused by the path back and forth to a satellite is going to handicap your interactivity. (38000km*2 =~ 300 msecs roundtrip time added due to the satellite link. This means highly interactive games such as MMORPGs are not for you, as well as that interactively typing over e.g. telnet connection will work miserably bad. Surfing the web will be ok.

Mmm

This all depends on the coverage of networks in the area you are sailing.
There is a wireless internet company in the UK, and there are ways to use a mobile phone network. You would need to call your provider for details. This will probably cost quite alot to put into place depending on how much you will use the service and where you will be.

Good Luck !

You can connect via GPRS on your mobile phone - That is charged by the Mb but is EXPENSIVE ! I spent £85 in 2 hours doing this, but if you really want to it can be done.

If using a mobile phone is not possible, you could have a look at satelite communications: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_Internet_access http://www.orbitresearch.co.uk/docs/satelite_internet_access.html Or search Google for more info..
