We had rats who walked in the back door and were living in the house a few months ago. We tried a humane trap set with meat or chocolate with no luck but then took advice from the Environmental Man at local Council. He advised sliced potato which satisfies both food and moisture rat requirements. We bought the break back traps on his advice but the instructions said not to set the traps for a week. Just get the rat used to eating the food each day off the trap until they're accustomed to finding it in the same place.

More often than not, a rat trap will be set with a type of food that a rat will not be able to resist. Foods with an especially strong smell are the best rat attractants, and should be considered first. Peanut butter, bacon, nuts and even chocolate have been used with success, but a good oily peanut butter will stay fresh longer and is considered one of the best baits. If there is a large amount of food in the surrounding area, such as in a feed mill, a different approach might need to be taken. Rats are always drawn to nesting materials such as straw, plastic foam, cotton and virtually any other kind of soft material. These may need to be physically tied down to the trigger to avoid them from being stolen, and using dental floss to secure them works well. When material like this is tied down, the rat will have to physically tug at it which will then release the spring mechanism, trapping the rat.

Snickers candy bars works if you dont mind potential ant.. <.<
It has chocolate, peanuts and all the things rats love, and will stick to the trap really REALLY good due to the Caramel...it's like the candy was designed for trapping rats!
**Edited to explain why snickers would be effective**

Rats have a thing for peanut butter. Drop a nice sized amount of peanut butter on a stickey trap in a corner or well hidden area check from day to day and you will have a nice surprise!

They will take chances for chocolate, leave the trap where it runs and on the second or third day you will have a rat.
