Perfectly good word -- just see the wiki reference. (-: I really like the phrase "primordial soup" -- you can just see the beginnings of life springing from this muck and stew.

It means 'of the first order', prime meaning 'first' like in 'prime minister' and 'ordial' from the word 'order'.
