Ignorance, arrogance, and greed.
-----------------------------------------
Zee HatMan –
Oil –
Just because we did not get it is not evidence that it was not a motive. Indeed, although the administration did not state this as a specific goal, it did claim that this would be one of the perks.
It is true that it did not turn out that way, however, that is evidence of failure and not intent.
Control –
The goal always was that leave Iraq with a government that was friendly to us, provide us with permanent military bases, assure us a reliable source of oil, and function as base to manipulate other countries in the region. Just because Iraq was not chosen to become the 51st state does not mean we intended for Iraq to be truly independent.
In fact, when asked what the US response would be if the Iraqis elected a radical cleric to lead the country, President Bush responded that, “we would not allow that”. How is that not control?
Again, this is evidence of failure, not the absence of intent.
Arrogance –
Exactly when did America achieve the God-like status of being the acknowledged all knowing, all powerful, and altruistic benefactor of all humanity?
It is arrogance when you think that that you know what is best for everyone (regardless of their opinion or feelings), particularly when you try to impose you desires on them through force. It is arrogant to think that you are so damn smart that you can manipulate one of the most complex and politically unstable regions on earth (and throughout human history). It is arrogance when you play God with other people’s lives, other people’s beliefs, and other people’s countries.
It is arrogance when you ruin the lives of others and then throw money at them and declare that everything is alright.
And again, this is just another example of failure, of arrogance coming before the fall

Oil - What oil did we get that wasn't purchased on the open market? None.
Control - No the plan has always be that we will leave Iraq as a democratic free nation in control of their own destiny.
Greed - That's pretty silly. See answer one above.
Arrogance - Yup that's it. We believe the Iraqi people need to govern themselves without outside interference. Americans are arrogent to believe that freedom is the answer to most problems. Americans are arrogent to believe that tyranny and terrorism are evil. Americans are arrogent people who have donated billions of dollars to people in trouble all over the world. Yup, that's arrogance! Good Answer!

A desire for hegemony in the middle east (which is driven by oil); a lack of ability to distinguish between terrorists (Al-Queda) and local bullies (Hussein); a hypocrisy that lets it interfere when oil is at stake and pretend (for mass consumption) that it is driven by humanitarian values (where was the US with Papa Doc Duvalier, Batista, Idi Amin etc etc?)

Because of Saddam.
Saddam was massacring his own people. Slaughtering the Shiites and Kurds by the thousands. Torturing all his prisoners without trial.
We liberated these people, and how do they thank us? Hahahaha JIHAD!
