If you live in the southern US, any northern state is a Yankee state.

If you live in the midwestern US, any New England state is considered a Yankee state.

This term "Yankee" comes from the American Revolutionary War with England, but the Yankee states were considered to be the "Union" in the American Civil War.

These states include (but does not include the border states) 23 states. The 23 states that remained loyal to the Union during the war: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

Of these, the Yankee states are, by common usage, those states east of the Mississippi river.

Hope this helps!
