I have found out that I am pregnant and have not taken any drugs, drank or anything, I dont even allow people to smoke around me. But I have been having trouble sleeping and did not want to take any medication, my friend came in and was smoking a joint. I took a couple of puffs and it mellowed me out, and I was able to get a sleep.

But I have felt ill since I woke up in the middle of the night, sickly and ill.

I know its not great, but does anyone know what the DEFINATE effects are of cannabis for unborn babies.

Please no nasty comments, I know its not perfect, so no lectures, I just want some medical facts.

I tried that route when I was preggo with my first, too, and it made me just as ill. As far as I know, though, cannabis never crosses the placenta, but using illegal drugs is never a good idea when you're pregnant.

When the baby's born, they drug test the infant. If you did it once, I doubt that it will show up, but I wouldn't advise you doing it again (not that I think that you will, as you're sicker than a dog right now)... You'll feel better tomorrow. Get some Sprite and some Saltines, and that should help.

Don't listen to these hypocrites on here saying that marijuana is going to cause brain damage... That is the biggest crock of lies and hugest misconception. Look up melanie dreher, and the studies she did. I have had different doctors tell me that there are no known birth defects or negativity to come from smoking marijuana while pregnant!! So nobody has the right to pass judgment when they clearly have no idea what the facts are.her baby will be healthy if she has a solid genetic line of healthy babies. If not, then that is the reason why her baby is not healthy. NOT MARIJUANA. marijuana during pregnancy has never produced any recorded negative effects on a fetus. You could smoke the entire time during pregnancy to relieve yourself from nausea and other ailments, if you wanted to. I can understand the hype because you're putting something into your body, but marijuana is a harmless medicinally used herb that is used all over the world. It does not kill brain cells. The study suggesting such a thing was performed in the 60's and the government scientists used gas masks to pump marijuana with no oxygen INTO MONKEYS for 15 minutes straight, daily. when the monkeys started dying, they attributed it to brain damage. Ummmm OF COURSE the monkeys had brain damage. They were without oxygen for that long, daily!!! Do your research. The studies performed on pregnant mothers who smoked marijuana habitually during pregnancy did not have any negative side effects. The side effects they did have were positive, and their brains were in no way impaired. she is 100 percent fine...(Unless some predetermined genetic factor comes into play)

I have a 17 year old sister who is mentally handicap from my mom smoking pot during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. I am not sure how many times. But my sister will not be mentally more mature than about a 2nd grader. It is so sad that drugs can damage someone so harshly. I know my sister is an extreme case, but is still really shatters my heart when I hear people doing drugs while pregnant.

She also had asthma, but she has MANY problems that have spanned off her mental state.

I would really suggest you speak to your doctor. There are things they can advise you to do to make sure you sleep well and yet not harm baby.

Just to let you know, if you continue to expose your child to drugs, when they do the drug testing at birth (required by law) you can lose you child if he/she tests positive for drugs. Not to scare you, just a bit of reality. Sorry

Research is inconclusive. most likely due to the fact that it is illegal. Here is a website on what some experts think.

Instead, try drinking warm milk or a relaxing tea. Avoid caffeine. Period. You'll sleep better without it. Don't eat anything sugary within a few hours of bed. Unfortunately, this is just the start of lack of sleep. Nap when you can. Hope that helps. Take care.

Well at least you only had a couple of puffs and didn't smoke the whole joint... stay away from marijuana for the duration of your pregnancy. Your baby should be okay since you didn't have too much, but check its health with an unltrasound.

This time last year I would take a few puffs every once and awhile. i was 12 weeks pregnant and it caused me to miscarry, then i had to get lectures from my doc about there being drugs in my system. If something happens to your baby because of that you feel so guilty.

Everything I've read relates it to the effects of smoking....there is no conclusive evidence relating it to brain damage or underdevelopment or anything...but i still wouldn't be smoking more than once or twice a month
What is bad for your baby is STRESS..so don't worry about stuff too much

affects babies brain, respiratory system, has been linked to miscarriage, cardiac system, its not great for the baby hey.
If you dont mind me saying, try some peppermint tea half hour before bed, that works for me, nothing sugary, just the peppermint tea. Its worth a try.
