sometimes it sounds like "s", but sometimes it sounds like "z". i'm really confused.

I think it can be pronounced both ways. It sounds equally okay when I say it with the "S" and "Z" sound. I usually pronounce it as starS, but like I said, I don't think it really matters :).

It should always sound like a 'z', like in the following words that rhyme with 'stars': cars, bars, jars and Mars (the planet).

The correct pronunciation is Stars, But the fashionables pronunce is as starz

yes, the last "s" in stars is an "s" sound, but it can sound like a "z" depending on your accent.
