I don't know if it's safe for your bf, but certainly not for you.
Why don't you guys just wait for a few days until your period is over???

Yes it is safe for both of you to have sex while you have your period. At one time this was called "Earning your red-wings". You'll understand when you go to wash up afterwards. Just remember that you are going to be much more sensitive during this time. You will either feel pain, or really intense pleasure.
As you have not said if you are using protection, I'd suggest being careful as you can still get pregnant during this time. I say, go for it, try it, and have fun. Be sure to put a dark coloured towel under you, folded over to catch the blood that flows out. You don't want to explain those bloody sheets to your Mom when she does the laundry.
For those who are ASSUMING this girl is not using protection and are freaking on her, remember, never assume anything, better people have broken their legs jumping to conclusions!

Overall, it isn't a health hazard. Your boyfriend should be wearing a condom during your period, but then again if you both haven't been tested for STDs, he should be anyways. I believe a woman is also more prone to get infections during her period so that might be a concern. But overall, it's safe and if you feel like doing so, you should be fine. Just remember, it is also possible to get pregnant while you are on your period.

Safe to have unprotected during a time when your tissues are swollen and very tender. Safe for him?
Forget him! What about you. Is unprotected sex ever SAFE? NO!
Should you trust anyone that is NOT totally committed to you in a marriage - NO!
I am the voice of EXPERIENCE. I have paid the price - trusting is not good sense - it is just not.
NO. (I am not Ms. morality either!) I just would rather not have what I have because I was "Trusting"
I Wish YOU well.
