Lenin really wanted Trotsky to hold power after his death. Trotsky was an educated man, quite mild-mannered and very popular in the party.
Stalin, all-though quite educated, was known to be brutal and his paranoia was already showing. At the death of Lenin, a trojka was holding the executive power in the Soviet Union, but STalin managed to execute every person standing in his way, and forced Trotsky to leave. Eventually he was killed in Mexico City by a hitman.
