Depression is largely due to the situation when you have no work to do or lonely. This enables mind to wander and reach unwanted conclusions. There are few anti depressants. But do not go after them. The best way to over come is to keep mind preoccupied in a healthy manner.Lonliness is the worst curse. You develop friends and wide circle of friends.Have some hobby. You move out and see how others live.Develop positive atttitude.Read the book "Power of positive thinking..."and apply the simple steps to develop your personality. You are always wanted by somebody and you have to find that somebody only.Practice of mental concentration,Yoga ,listening good music, prayers etc are effective methods to fight depression.Good luck .Prayers.

You seem to have answered you own question. I believe that you can indeed CHOOSE to be depressed - OR you can choose another way. There is an excellent writer in this field called Dorothy Rowe. Look up her insightful books in your local library, read them, and I guarantee you'll understand how to overcome depression - which to a large extent, is a self-inflicted condition.

Counselling is useful as a way of changing negative cognitions. In the same way as trying to change someone from their phobia. It may not be a permanent change, but it certainly helps.
In more severe cases, drugs may be more beneficial at the start, but there are not always great side-effects and may be prescribed unnecessarily.
Often, people can get themselves out of a rut by making a few simple life changes.

oh dear poor you.I was depressed for many years.I think the answer lies within your own mind. You know that it is entirely up to you what you think about .It truely is.However this is not easily done and takes practice . As you say positive attitude and thinking about and appreciating what you have got rather than dwelling on what you have not.You have to dismiss negative thought.Yes you can.Tell them to go away You will not think that way.!Get an attitude if you like, refuse to think low [depressed] thoughts .Dwell on the good side of life.Spoil yourself with light reading, lovely music.Keep busy.Leave the dark side of life to its own devices untll you are strong.Remember it is up to you what you thihk about .You are strong I am sure or we would not have heard from you.Very good and careing thoughts are sent you you as you start out on your journey from out of depression.Remember.choose what you think about---practice maketh perfect i

Well that is the thing about depression - depression interferes with logical reasoning and thus depressed people find it difficult to appreciate what they do have and are unable to view things more positively.

Count your blessings every day, take time to appreciate the small things in life. Cognitive Behavioural therapy can be very helpful in changing unhelpful thought patterns, but the key is to recognise them for what they are. If you catch yourself overgeneralising, imagine a big red sign saying "STOP", and replace the unhelpful thought with a better one. For example, stop yourself from thinking "My life is utterly hopeless" and repeat to yourself three times "I'm going through a hard time at the moment, but every day is a new day and things can only get better"

etc etc

we wouldnt know...he is the lord almighty, christianity is full of mystery. and even if he did, its not the source of all those healings and miracles, it is because he is the son of god...anybody can have a positive mental attitude and couldnt even dare to perform half the miracles and healings Jeses performed. :) read the bible sometimes, and got o church when you can. if you really open your eyes, you would see that the bible and the church hold the key understanding christianity and gaining everything it has to offer, including a ticket to heaven! :)
