Well they are inter-realated really. Although depression can be triggered because of no known cause (i.e. it arises in the absence of any stressful circumstance), in many instances depression arises because of a major stressors, or many stressors over ones life. Depression falls on a continuum, so being really 'down' is, you could argue ,a mild form of depression. A more major form of depression would involve more severe symptoms. Another thing with depression is that there are no hard and fast rules with regards to symptoms because there are many symptoms. For Major Depression to be diagnosed however, one has to have had a least 5 of the many symptoms (as laid out by the DSM-IV) everday for at least 2weeks.

Clinical depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. Circumstances do not cause it although negative situations can exacerbate the condition.
An evaluation by a doctor would probably be the best way to know for sure.

According to the DSM IV, used to diagnose psychological disorders, the heightened apathy, loss of motivation, negative self-thoughts, lowered esteem, etc. needs to be persistent for a period of time.
We ALL have lows and feel down with some of the above, but if they prsist to the extreme where daily functions are impaired, then it's time to go and see a professional (start with your GP).
If you know why you're down, you can work on trying to rectify that in the meantime.
Good luck...it WILL et better.

Symptoms of 'medical depression' as opposed to being depressed :-
Loss of interest in normal daily activities. You lose interest in or pleasure from activities that you used to enjoy.
Depressed mood. You feel sad, helpless or hopeless, and may have crying spells.

Short bouts of depression are normal. Any long duration of it is unhealthy and one should seek someone to talk to about it. I don't believe in the quick fix of meds, and you should be aware that some exercise and a good diet are a great start for the cure for depression.

If you believe you may suffer from clinical depression, go to the prozac website and do the self assesment test, it may be a guide to whether you should see a docter.
