capital punishment has never been a deterrant for murder. most murders are crimes of passion. nothing can legislate that out of existance. other murders, capital punishment is revenge for another murder, nothing more. in the 1700's it was a capital offense to steal a loaf of bread and a boy of about 12 was hung from a ships 'yardarm' in Vancouver harbour for just that. a hungry person would face a choiice, starve to death or grab the bread. the one is much quicker than the other.
during a 10 year period in canada, some 11 people were found to be not guilty of the crimes convicted of. I don't think that they would think an "I'm sorry" would qualify for the state murdering them.
one big point for myself, against it, is that death is quick, comparatively speaking, while life in prison means 365 days of every year in a steel or concrete box. that means for a 20 year sentence, someone would face 7,300 days of nothing.
which would you think the more punishment, as they sit and dream of a life they once new and enjoyed?
murder is not an answer to murder
