National fruit is the Japanese plum (ume). I have never eaten one straight off the tree. Do people do that? Usually they are pickled (as umaboshi, an acquired taste, meant to be eaten VERY sparingly) or used to make liqueur (umeshu). Ume is also used as flavoring for all kinds of things--from potato chips to candy to wine coolers. The trees are very beautiful. They bloom before the sakura start blooming and are a darker pink color.
Another fruit I like is the persimmon (kaki). In Japan there are two basic kinds--the big squat, squarish ones and the smaller, longer ones. The small ones must be dried before they're edible. The big ones you can eat straight off the tree. The flesh is rather hard (unlike the Chinese kind) and the flavor is so subtle, which is why the big kaki are never cooked.
Another Japanese fruit is the Japanese pear (nashi). It tastes like a pear but looks like a big yellow apple.
And mikan are just little tangerines. They're not very different from American tangerines.
Most other fruits are available, but ABSURDLY expensive. Would you pay $20 for a whole watermelon? Would you pay $6 for a little box of blueberries? And that's not counting the perfect "gift" fruits that start at $50. . . so when they break out the melon slice at the end of the banquet, you'd best eat it. The whole melon probably cost at least $30.

I have no idea what's the national fruit of japan.
I didn't know there was such a national fruit, but i do know that japanese loves strawberries, melons(honeydew/rock melon), oranges(mikan), watermelon, peaches, apple, and grapes.
But i'm sure that there are many more fruits that they like.

I think foreigners don't know the tastes of
#1 kaki (Japanese persimmon),
#2 nashi (Japanese pear),
#3 unshu-mikan also known as ko-mikan (small Japanese orange).
Give it a try. I believe you will really get to love them.
