I know for a fact that humankind is generally evil. Evidence is simple, all you have to do is look at our world today. We have not been able to stop killing eachother since the dawn of time. That is why we need God's forgiveness and mercy.

Human-kind is different from any other species on Earth... We cause death to many living things simply for the continuation of our own well-being. This could be considered an evil trait if the process of killing these things were pure intention or even demonic... however this is not the case of what is intended by the human...
Humans are born selfish beings. They continue on through there life foreseeing every activity for self efficiency. That is until a certain enlightenment causes a person to open ones eyes to the other possiblities in life.

I think that we're born with the potential for both good and evil and that we struggle on a daily basis to keep a balance between the two, the problem is that what may seem good to me could be evil to someone else.

this is tricky as u have the question of whether there can be something only good and only bad. good and evil were born from survivalist instincts. the same found in every animal. good being the positives towards mental or physical health and evil being the negatives. since most people at least value their own lives i would have to say that from each person's own perspective they are generally good, even if others may feel they are behaving evil towards them.

Well, it’s interesting to note what we believe to be good is just a belief associated with specific actions. Generally, I think that if life preservation and perpetuation of our species is out goal, then “good” would be anything that promotes life, society, happiness, brotherhood, etc. From that perspective, I think we are generally good if being good is anything life promoting. Conversely anything we see as “bad” would be the opposite; just because there are people and actions that do not promote life does not mean that as a species we are generally bad. Ultimately however the answer to this question all depends on your definitions.

Machievelli said (in The Prince) that a good leader is one who maintains order, by whatever means possible -- a good citizen is one who does as he's told.

Ultimately, it seems to depend on the potential for the use of Force, and this applies even between Nations on the international stage.

Humans are predisposed to evil. "The heart is exceedingly evil, who can know it?" We know this, because children, if not parentally disciplined, would gravitate towards misbehavior, not towards good behavior. Unanimous and general consensus in social and moral order, norms, laws and civility help to maintain cultural sanity and welfare, acting as the "societal parental authority". Without such statutes, then societal breakdown and civil decay would ensue. People would "naturally" shift to negative and destructive behavior, not towards good behavior. Good behavior and goodness must be learned.

Good. I think that we humans have the capacity for evil, but we mistake self interest for "evil." On the whole, I see goodness way more than evil.... then again, I NEVER watch the 10 o'clock news!
