I'm not talking about some pagan holiday or observance a million years ago or whatever. I'm talking about Christmas. The birth of Christ. It's called Christmas for just that reason. For those that are atheist, why do you observe a day with such a name as Christmas? Why no Evolution-mas? Why no Atheist-mas? In the childrens secular world, Is Santa a bad guy because he only shows up and brings gifts at Christmas?

you get them a book on darwinism BUT after the holiday cause its on sale then and they dont believe anyway so save yourself a few bucks
why that book? cause they dont believe the world was created in 6 days and god rested on the seventh and all that junk. they believe in evolution and the hard sciences because they can put their fingers on that. no faith just facts. thats okay too.
then you can give them a prayer for peace
wish them a merry christmas not a happy holiday and be on your way
#2 santas always a good guy. thanks for the hockey game you gave me when i was eight, had to be the best gift ever.
merry christmas and peace to you and yours

Christmas has evolved (heh) beyond the celebration of the birth of christ. It's about peace and harmony, and family, and coming together and the spirit of giving. Or you can take the more depressing view that its a corporate holiday who promotes the giving of gifts to encourage buying and thus profits - much like Valentine's day is. Not that it isn't also about the birth of christ, its just everyone will have different views on... well everything.

I'm an atheist, but I celebrate it with my christian family because its a time for us to be together which I'm pretty certain they use as the reason to celebrate it more than the birth of christ. Would Jesus not want me to celebrate it if this is what it does for us?

You seem mad, would you rather all non-christians not celebrate christmas? If anyone needs the christmas spirit I think it's you.

Oh and since the question you posted was what do I want? I'll take a Cubs jersey. Thanks.

Sometimes the name of a thing is less important than how good it can make people feel. I doubt very much that Christ would say "No, don't celebrate Christmas and have a warm and loving time with your family because you didn't worship me." If that was the case, then he would not be the person the bible talks about because he would be selfish.

Personally, I believe that Jesus was around when the bible says he was, but so were millions of other people and we're all equal and worthy of love. I choose to celebrate it as a time of giving and sharing and teach my family to do the same with everyone no matter what their beliefs.

Even though there is proof that Jesus was not born on the day that we celebrate his birth, does not mean that we do not have the right to choose what day it was. It is all about Jesus. How he loved everyone in the world. It gives us a chance to celebrate the love he gave to our family, friends and loved ones. Makes no difference to me what time of year Jesus was born in. Just makes every day special and we should share that Love with everyone we know. You never know what will come tomorrow. I believe in Santa. He is part of the magic of Christmas. Even for Christians. I still get presents from Santa and I'm 25.

Well I guess we simply ignore the name and enjoy practicing family traditions. It will be my childs first "christmas" and don't want to spoil the joy of it by getting into the whole religious context of it we plan over the years to simply let them believe what they want if they want to discuss it we will if not why not let them be kids. I love trimming the tree, decorating, giving gifts and I feel that it is the one time of year where people are somewhat nice to each other and enjoy the season.

so you don't like to admit the truth what else is new more than lies Christ was born contrary to your beliefs of virgin conception .
and even though his life is disgraced by hateful and murderous
people that steal and degrade in his name maybe if he was alive he might forgive you but I doubt if for the exploitation of Jesus ranks beneath the fate of your demons and devils so santa was renamed too but you know how real he is . love the childish attempt at jealousy to bad I saw through you now go ahead and delete the truth cause it hurts to see honest truth .I don't mind
that either .And you are not talking about Christmas but about you fragile ego you should be in the psychology venue not spiritual !
peaceout anyway

Good question. I think that the person or persons that reply that Christmas is a pagan holiday just says that so they can justify getting lots of gifts without thinking of the origin of the name. Christ was not born on December 25th, but that is the chosen date to celebrate it, so stop talking (you know who you are) about pagan holidays.

Heh, Christmas to some of my evil friends says it's short for "Christ Massacre." To me, It's a stolen holiday by the Christians who adopted it as their own to gain popularity around Constantine's time frame because christianity was basically new.
