If you want to go into computer science then you must learn MS office or a variation, just to do homework. Preparing visuals, documents etc.
Frontpage is for web pages and not the better of the software to learn. It is easy but buggy. Learn from code then find a software that meets the job needs. Apache and others are more advanced.

VB, is a shell. If you do not know how to program the functions under the boxes it will not work. Learn C++, JAVA, NET.
SQL server is only a small part of the server support system. Good to learn but not enough. My 16 year old daughter knows most of this stuff except SQL, she has not needed it yet.
Best bet: pick up a school catalog and see what the CS class course is. Compare a few differrent schools. As a rule the classes are what you need to learn for a job.

In my point of view, Microsoft Office is the suitable software for a 17 years old. Because MS Office offers many software's in one package. first of all he should know word, Excel, and PowerPoint as a starting point. then after that if he is interested in an advanced software he can start with Visual Basic or MS Front Page.

This totally depends upon what your teenage son/daughter wants to do. If he/she has very little knowledge of Computers then start with MS Office. If he/she has a preference towards designing then Frontpage is the way to go.
Finally if he/she is interested in making new software then Visual Basic is the stuff to focus on.
In all cases MS Office can be learnt for basic work.
