If you have the time and money .. i HIGHLY recommend visiting Salvador, Bahia as well.

Rio is a wonderful city.. but Salvador is much nicer and its the heart of Brazil. If you want to experience Brazil and the Culture go to Salvador... its Amazing. If you're unable to make a trip there.. You can mainly do the same things in Rio.
as for things to do in RIO Highly recommend :

- eat at a Churrascaria. Thats the name of the type of restaurant that serves Barbecue. Brazil is well known for their barbecue and its excellent. You can do this in Sao Paulo city too.. if you dont get a chance in Rio.. there is a place in Sao Paulo called FOGO DE CHAO http://www.fogodechao.com/comments.php?lid=9

- Drink a Caipirinha .. Their famous alcoholic drink. You can buy them anywhere..at your hotel.. restaurants .. the Churrascaria .. on the sides of the street by the Beaches where they Serve burgers..

-See a Capoeira show. This is their martial arts. You can look look up the history which is fasinating. 100s of years ago slaves in Brazil (Salvador) would practice this Martial arts to kill their masters .. they were able to fool them by making it seem like a type a dance.. they would form a Roda (a circle) singings and playing instruments while the Capoeira was practiced inside the Circle. Its no longer practiced as a marital art.. but rather as an art form.

- visit Sugar Loaf mountain and Corcovado mountain, where Jesus is. Amazing View !

- Take a city tour

- take a walk on Copacabana or Ipanema beach

If you leave Brazil without experiencing these things.. then you haven't experienced Brazil.

Dont walk alone at night.. walk around groups.
dont flash your camera around too much

Boa Sorte

It depends on how much time and budget you have. You can visit Recife and Natal for great beaches. Manaus is a nice place too, in the middle of Amazon and a trip by boat on the Amazon and inside the jungle(forest) is great fun. You cannot miss Iguacu Falls and Curatiba. Brazil is a big country and the best way is to travel by air. But be prepared for unforseen delays. Even the Capital city Brasilia which is a designed and planned city is worth seeing. I have gone to Brazil over 10 times and my list is Sao Paulo, Rio, Curatiba, Iguacu Falls, Recife, Natal, Manaus, Brasilia
