There are very few real blacksmiths anymore and most there are are self taught. The blacksmith made many different things out of iron such as horse shoes, parts fore farm machinery, tools and anything else used that was made of metal in the preindustrial days. The basic tools were a forge with an air pump, an anvil or two with different shapes, forge tools and a wenching tank. If you can get you hands on an old forge and a few other items you can set about teaching yourself smithing. There some practicioners that you will find at museums who may be able to help you get information on the craft.

There are schools available for learning the blacksmith trade or you can 'apprentice' to an established blacksmith. It is hard, grueling work so be sure you know exactly what is involved before commiting to a program.

Try searching your state for blacksmiths. If you can find any within reasonable distance contact them and ask if they will take you as an apprentice. Some will want payment others will do it for free and just want there craft to not die out.

Check out cultural centers in your area and see if they know of anyone that can help or grants.
