If the meds don't work that right there is a disadvantage. Most 'alternative meds' don't work all of the time.

Alternative Medicine can be very effective if you get it from a knowledgeable healer, someone educated in this field.
There are also Alternative Healing Reference books, so you can educated yourself about these alternatives to make an informed decision.
I have found acupuncture to be very effective for me, and taking certain herbs and supplements for some conditions.or health problems.
Many people do not want to take the time to learn about these alternatives. They would rather just go to a doctor who will prescribe some pills to pop ... this way they don't have to think about taking care of themselves in a holistic way.
Did you know that drugs are the 4th leading cause of death in America? I prefer healing naturally over some drug which will have side effects.
If there's a disadvantage of alternative medicine ... it's the lack of knowledge by the public. And that's because the companies that make alternative medicine cannot make any claims, because the FDA will get on their case. And the Drug companies have very powerful lobbies in Washington.
Medicine is all about Drug Companies making money. Most drugs do not and will not heal you ... they just take away or ease the symptoms of a disease. Your own body's healing mechanisms is what cures you eventually.
To keep your immune system strong ... take zinc and anti-0xidants (Iike vitamin C).. echinechea is an herb which cleans your blood and acts like a natural anti-biotic. But you only take it when you are sick. And only for 4 days (4 times a day).
The only disadvantage is taking something you know nothing about.
If you would want to try alternative medicine over drugs, either do some research or see a qualified holistic healer.
More and more people are getting sick and tired of paying high drug prices when there are more affordable natural things that can cure you of most ailments. (and most of them DO NOT have side effects, unless maybe taking them incorrectly, or too much).
If people would eat healthy diets they wouldn't get sick as much. But we have turned into a fast food nation ... and most of that food is garbage... you are what you eat after all!
It is also very important to drink good clean water.
Many people have health problems just because they don't drink enough water daily.

There are advantages and disadvantages in both alternative medicine and conventional medicine. Focusing on alternative medicine, products that claim to be natural and/or to produce a specific natural or homeopathic effect are not regulated by the FDA or any other body. Therefore, you do not wholly know always what you get and/or if you are getting enough of a specific element to produce the desired result. Furthermore, some natural elements, even specific vitamins, taken in excess can be toxic. A great number of people believe that if something is natural than it is alright to take and it is not always necessarily so. It is best to get educated on this subject and make informed decisions about the kind of elements one puts into their body. The information should be from a non-biased source.
Alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, in my experience have proven to be effective. There are other types of therapies that are effective, as well. The body has a tendency to heal itself and these therapies work towards accelerating that process.
Having a healthy lifestyle...eating properly, exercising and getting enough rest is the key to setting the body and mind in balance. It is the best preventative to illness and disease.
I have concerns for people who turn to alternative medicine for serious conditions, i.e. such as cancer. Alterantive medicine may be able to assist in diminishing some of the negative side-effects of the conventional meds but should never be used wholly to get rid of cancer, for example.

There are so many therapies and approaches. No one knows everything about all of them. I have spent thousands of dollars over the years looking for help with my health problems. I have had a pharmacy class in herbs, so I have a bit of help there. I know that many Chinese herbs packed in China, may have over the counter medicine in them to make them work better. That is expected in China, but not elsewhere. On the other hand, China has relied on herbs for ages and their knowledge and products can be supremely useful.
Most MDs do not know much about alternative/complementary medicine. Their degrees are in traditional medicine, so they are not always able to give an informed opinion.
The same is true of pharmacist, although pharmacists have databases they can turn to to find drug/herb/supplement interactions.
As with all treatments, there are no rankings or reviews available to make a good choice about what option will suit you best.

The main thing I hate is that manufacturers arent officially regulated/go through real quality checks. meaning you may end up taking a bunk pill, or an herb that says it has 150 mg this or that but actually only contains 20, and to make it worse may contain lead or mercury or something too.
all so the government/medical field can make money. i'd rather some of my tax dollars go to labs that verified these herbs rather than most of what it goes to.

They all are not regulated by the FDA. Not the same amout of each ingredient may be in every pill for example. The side effcts may not be know. Can interact with your regular meds. Talk to a dr. before taking any alt. med.
