There is true respect and false respect. False respect is due to your position, power or money. True respect is something you have earned, and it may come from a child, or a co worker.
To earn respect, give respect. Obey the commandments and the golden rule.
Most important of all is respect for ones self. When you see yourself in the mirror , do you like what you see? Are you proud of that human being?

I used to think this answer was really trite, but truly you have to believe in yourself. Focus on the positive things in your heart and soul, focus on the things that you can do rather then the things you can't. Everyone has something that they are really good at, something they really care about. The only one who can lower your respect is is yourself. I don't allow it anymore. Any time I start that behavior I stop and start allover again.

I do not feel that respect can be won--I believe respect is something that is earned through hard work, understanding, patience, honesty, etc.
