Sometimes not much! A child just might want to draw something because he/she thinks it's cool. Unless you are a trained professional don't look into a child's art work too deeply. The piece might have absolutely the opposite meaning of what you think. For example-- many years ago I worked as a pre-school screener. We tested each incoming kindergartner in many areas. One was psychologically. We had each child do what we call a "DRAW A MAN' as a test to see where they were developmentally. One child drew the person completely upside down. Many criteria have psychological explanations for this. My first instinct, however, was to simply ask the child why he did this. His answer was " So you could see It!" I happened to have been sitting across the table from the child . He felt he needed to draw it this way cause I may not be able to turn it around and see it right side up!
Of course there are times when the meaning behind a child's art will obviously come through. Then again a very depressed child may draw a very uplifting picture to compensate for their state of mind. Kind of like wishful thinking. Another child may draw a totally dark blue or purple scene . It may just be their favorite color!

what a child is thinking of,his/her inner thoughts, will equal his picture/art. why? children are candid by nature and tend to express themselves straightforwardly.
