That the draft should be debated at all in the councils of a free government is cause of dismay. The question is nothing less than whether the most essential rights of personal liberty shall be surrendered and despotism embraced in its worst form. – Daniel Webster

I think Congressman Rangel's statement was brilliant. In less than one day Rangel has changed the views on the war. This can be seen in the new way in which supporters now choose to describe it. Yesterday it was a "War", today it is a "Conflict." Many supporters are beginning to grasp at any means which they believe will keep their own children safe from the tragedy of war. Today you hear many supporters say such things as "the war was not a legal declared war" or "it is not a war, it is a conflict therefore a draft cannot be instituted".
What is actually occurring, is that Rangel is forcing a national consensus that this war was the act of a renegade president. People are asking, "why if it was not a legal war, is it not an illegal war?" It appears that finally the right questions are being asked of the right people.
I say well done to Rangel. It's about time we had an elected official with the guts to to step up to the plate. Now if we could just get the rest of them to either swing the bat or get off the field!

This is a hard one for me. I agree that the draft would make some of our leaders think twice about starting wars willy nilly, if they thought their kids might be the ones to go, but Im also opposed to anyone being forced to participate in war against their will. Being a parent, I lean very heavily in the direction of my two sons freedom to live peaceful lives. I have a 10 and a 14 year old, and the thought of this war going on beyond the time when they could be drafted is very real and frightening to me. I did not bring them into this world to kill or be killed for the agendas of bloated politicians.

I think it's an awful idea. We don't need it. We have plenty of troops who are sitting here in the US who can be deployed. The Armed Forces are always continually turning away potential recruits and are currently cutting back forces. There are tens of thousands of volunteers out there who are turned down, so forcing people into service is not the answer. I think we need to increase our recruiting limits and give necessary funds to the military so that additional troops can be trained and we can keep the ones we do have already.
I think this draft thing is a Dem scare tactic to make people hate the war on terror and the military.

It does not matter what we think becasue it is getting ready to happen shortly... and it will be a new kind of draft where all people 45-50 and below will have to serve in some Mitiary or Civilian manner! There are laws already established addressing this issue.

I agree with you.
As for the draft, it won't happen. The people will never accept it again because of the discrimination of the draft before.
Now, if the country is in a crisis, such as when Pearl Harbor was attacked.... I hope there are still enough red-blooded American who will line up to volunteer. But they need a real war.... a real reason. If they have that, they won't need a draft. There will be volunteers.
Best Wishes,
Sue

You know I just hate to admit it, but I think you will have a draft, in 95% of politicians, its either they are saying we will be there at LEAST till 2010 and the number one complaint since day 2 is there is not enough troops to do it right, only 5% of politicians say pull out now. the worse part, is I think that will only escalate things.

I am old school military and I think it would be a disaster especially for the youth of this country.they have plenty of people willing to join and I think it should stay that way, free will. Now if we ever are invaded and our country is at war with an aggressive nation trying to take what is ours that's a different story.I think if we were not so worried about oil the terrorist would leave us alone. They have been fighting among themselves for thousands of years. We go to there soil look what happened!

i think it should be a last ditch effort. I mean the only reason why they did that was bc no one was signing up and they wanted people even though some were famous the government thougt they should have to go to and the only way to get them to go also is to have the draft. for the military in todays world There are a lot of men and women signing up for the military so i do not think we really need one. But if we had to have one bc we did not have enough ppl signing up then of course we would have to do what we needed to do to protect ourselves.
