It uses the sun's rays for energy. If not it uses a tank like a car. Only, it uses a tank for combusting the fuel. A tank that is filled with oxygen.

The rocket contains it own oxygen (more correctly, the oxidizer). In solid rockets the oxidizer chemical is mixed in with the fuel chemical. In liquid rockets the two are kept separate until they are mixed in the nozzle. A typical oxidizer/fuel combination for liquid rockets is liquid oxygen and jet fuel. Liquid hydrogen is also used as fuel, and other chemicals (other that oxygen) can be used as oxidizers.

that's the difference between rocket engine and jet engine. rocket enging carries it's own oxygen. The huge tank you see under the shuttle is an oxygen tank.
