You actually have 256MB but sharing some memory with your video adapter.
You first need to know if you have available slots to install more memory in your motherboard. Get at least 512 extra MB.

Try the Crucial system scanner at http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ if you don't want to open your computer.

In your case, a video card would also be a good upgrade so you don't have to share any memory with your integrated video adapter. This will also releave the CPU from some work performed by the video card.

You actually have 256M of RAM - 32M is being shared with your video. Go to www.crucial.com and search for your computer brand and model. It will tell you what kind of memory you need and how much you can have max. I recommend a 512M increase (to take you to a total of 768M). 512M is usually a good base but 768 will give you a little more room to breathe.

Get the make and model of your pc and go to best buy... ask them... Make sure you ask if your motherboard will support two different sizes of memory if you plan on adding to the current instead of replacing, as some motherboards will only accept matching sticks such as 2 256mb and not one 128 and one 256.
