Carrot temptation was always fun for me. Beginning at one end of the arena, the rider who is mounted, rides their horse to the other end of the arena as fast as they can. They dismount, grab a carrot sticking out of some stacked hay/straw bales, then they must tempt their horse to follow them back to the finish line without touching the reins. If the horse/pony crosses the finish line before the rider then the pair was disqualified. Fastest time wins and the horse/pony always got the carrot in the end. Can be done saddled or bareback but we always did it bareback. Gait can be set to a trot for safety and younger riders if needed.

We played these games at pony club rallies...
Ball and Racquet - rider carries a tennis ball balanced on a tennis racquet and ride through poles as in pole bending. (you can use an egg instead of a ball) This can also be a team or pairs game by having the riders hand off the racquet and ball to another rider.
Chase Me Charlie
Set up 2 jumps on opposite ends of the arena. Start at the lowest height. Riders proceed in turn around the arena and over the jump. Once all riders have gone over the jumps are raised and they do it all over again. Any horse that refuses or knocks down the jump is eliminated. Last rider standing wins.
Sugar lump race.
Plates of flour with sugar lumps hidden in them are placed at one end of arena. Riders race to plates, dismount, find a sugar lump using only their teeth. No hands allowed. They mount up and race back to the finish line. Horse gets the lump at the end of the race.
Delsey Derby
Riders pair up and hold a length of toilet tissue (hence delsey derby) between them. They then walk, trot, canter and change direction, much like a pleasure class, holding the tp between them.
Have Fun!!

Ducking!
Have a plastic duck in a bowl of water at the end.
Rider has to collect fishing net from a pipe at the half way point, ride down & catch the duck ( if you use a full bowl you can make the rider dismount & put the duck back in the water if it falls on the ground then remount before another attempt) return the net to it's starting position & cross the finish line holding the duck.
You can make this seasonal with apples, baubles etc.

What is the gender of your horses? Here are a few ideas... Marie Antionette and King Louis (the 16th), Romeo and Juliet. David and Goliath (if your horse is REALLY tall)! Salt and Pepper. Good and evil Fun stuff like that! I have always wanted to dress my gelding up like king louis and put a white wig upon my head and be Marie Antionette! Lol! Hope I helped! Blessings :)

My students favorite game was Ride-A-Buck.
Ridden bareback, place a dollar bill between riders knee and the horse. Next the riders line up on the rail and someone calls out gaits. Mix it up with canter to halt, halt to trot.... transitions. Change directions, add obstacles or trail class maneuvers, and for advanced riders you can add low jumps. Riders are eliminated when their "Buck" falls. The winner keeps the "Bucks"
I taught english riding and this was a great game for my students to learn balance and an independant seat.

At fair they do ride out dismount, put your forehead on a baseball bat spin while someone counts to ten, remount ride back. We occassionaly get a counter who counts one for every 3-4 spins. Those are some dizzy riders. They also do senior lead line, they make they the parents riding dismount and put on "depends" adult diapers in the middle of the arena. A good laugh

its really fun to play red light green light on horseback! Everybody lines up at the start and there's one person/judge (or more judges) who turns the other way and says "green light" to signal people to go and "red light" to stop. As soon as they say red light every rider should stop their horse, if they're not stoped by the time the person turns around, they have to go back to the start line. This is a great game for testing control of your horse! Also, its lots of fun!!! ITs fun to see how risky people are when it comes to their speed when they hear "green light"!!!
Another fun game is "musical stalls"!!! All you need to do is set up some poles to make stalls. Then, you're group of riders walks/trots/canters (depending on skill level) around all the poles in a circle and when the music stops (or somebody could just clap...) everybody rides into a "stall" and whoever doens't have a stall is out...they can then stop the music (or just sit out...) Its a fun, and a little competetive game!!!
Lastly, you could play red rover on horseback. (this is for intermediate to advanced riders ONLY.) You have one person who is "it" and everybody else lines up on one side of the arena. The "it" person then says "red rover, red rover, send all _____ on over" an example for the ____ is "pinto's" or "bay's" or "horses with stars".... Then, all the riders/horses who match the description run (canter/gallop or whatever speed fits them) to the other side of the arena. The "it" person tries to tag the people running to the other side. If the "it" person can't get anybody after 4 runs or so, make everybody trot. Every time somebody gets tagged, they join the "it" person against the rest of the group. This game is lots of fun, but is ONLY meant for advanced riders!!! It can also be tiring to your horses if they aren't in good enough shape.
Hope your show is a great success!!!
