well how many fish do you have in there? what color is the algae? i just got doen fighting my algae (for now) it was browna nd was growing on the leftover food that was sitting on the bottom. do you have filtratin in thre and a good current going? well i have tried the algae destroyers and didnt have the ligth on and it still grew. so if its brown and smells ad then you ar eprobably over feeding. if its green and suc then maybe you should go to the pet store and get algae eaters. lol i have a 40 gallon aquarium and have been cleaning it out every 2 weeks!!!!! i bough some snails yesterday and tehy seem to be doing a good job! (i just hope they dont mate and such)lol but if your only clening it out once a month then that sounds about right..... it is probably nornal since your aquarium is maller and you are only clelaning it one a month but if it really bothers you then buy a snail or an algae eater =D
good luck
ive been cleanign my fish tank everyy 2 weeks, (take me 2-3 hours a taime just to do a 50% water change) anyways. all i have in ther eis a full gorwn black moor goldfish and he's huge! and an african dwarf frog. so maybe your fish os over stocked?
i got 2 blue mystery snails yesterday. they ar ea good size and are pretty =) there anout an ince long

At most all pet shops that sell fish and accessaries they should have whats called an algae magnet to help clean the inside of the tank! Depending on the type of fish you already have, you could try purchasing some type of algae eating fish such as chinese algae eaters or what is called a sucker mouth catfish (plocastumus) or something like that! Also, you could try some aquarium salt! If you have fresh water fish then please follow the instructions on the container as it can be added safely which will also help with the health of the fish's scales.

if you buy plants and and algae eaters like snails do your research though cause some eat plants I use apple snails for the sides of the tank and trumpet snails for the substrate dont forget to turn your light on or the plants will die on a 10 gallon tank an expensive and highly effective light is the energy saver variety (only the ones in the shape of a paperclip though the others dont work)and a 30% water change 1 a month and my water is always crystal clear

I had the same problem of getting too much algae in my fish tank. i have got 4 gold fish and some blue line sharks, some artificial plans and some decorations. when the temperature started to drop in winters, i had to plug in a heater in the aquarium. probably coz of that algae suddenly started to appear and one day most of the aquarium and other stuff was covered with it. intially, i had to clean the tank manually but after a few days same problem reappeared. so what i did was bought a small fish known as " Sucker" and put it in the tank. this fish amazingly cleaned all the algae within two days and i didnt need to clean it. so my advice to you is buy this Sucker and get rid of all the algae in ur tank.

Have good algae eaters and a good filtration system - make sure to change the filter regularly. You don't need chemicals! You can just clean the side of the tank with a plain sponge or scrubber (no soap!) every so often. Also, don't over-feed your fish as the extra food just builds up in the tank.

Why not get some algae eaters or snails? Mystery snails are good for algae (and won't take over your tank) and so are Siamese Algae Eaters (SAE), Gold Algae Eaters, and Otocinclus. I would avoid Chinese Algae Eaters if you have other fish in the tank though because the adults can be really mean to their tankmates.

UV sterilizer is the best and $$$ way. it kills waterborne algae spores
getting rid of waste material is the 2nd best way but it's not FOC. you need a top internal filter which is also $$$.
if you don't want to spend a bomb on an expensive filter, change water & clean the filter often, so that there is little chance for waste to feed algae growth in the water.

use anti algae water treatment you can buy form any pet shop but be careful,
do not use it if you have green plants, snails, shrimps or craps in your aquarium.
if you don't want to have green algae you should put your aquarium in the shade with no sun to reach but to get rid of the algae is not that simple without the use of medical treatment
i have a 30 gallon aquarium i cant change the water frequently so i have to use these stuff and they are really great.

do you have any real plants in the tank? they will compete with the algae for food...also you can get small algae eating fish...but your tank is getting too much light whether you turn on the lights or not...maybe you also have a high amount of phosphates in your water.....a small amount of algae is good in the tank...it's only when it gets out of control that it's dangerous...

get a plecostomus. they eat algae, and they grow accordingly to the size of tank they are in. if it's in a small tank-like most fish it will stay small. it will only grow big if it's in a big tank.
