thought about that when I went swimming with some friends and we saw some dark rain clouds approaching. starting thinking why rain clouds are dark. good thing it didnt rain until we got home!

They appear dark because they are very thick clouds and obscure sunlight from getting through. If viewed from above, they appear pure white.

On the fifth day God created rain clouds and said "bugger... I've run out of white paint, oh well, I'll use this colour I was going to use when I was gonna create Battleships tomorrow" ;)

Ooh, and ignore the saying "every cloud has a silver lining". Its likely to be a 747 coming in the other direction!!

Well you could think of it like this, the volume of water contained must be higher. A glass of water is clear, a pool is blue, the ocean is dark blue or dark green. The colour increases with volume.

Those clouds are closer to us, there is less light coming through them because they are more dense and the water the contain is more liquid than vapor.

Plus, since they are denser they might have also more pollutants in them.

um, because they have more water in them, therefore, allow less light through
