Yes, they did do away with it. What's race got to do with it? Everyone in this area shops at Walmart... and we are a very integrated area because of a large military base. I never thought of any racial issues to do with Walmart or their lay-a-way program.

For Wal-Mart to remain the "cheapest place" to shop, the company cannot afford to hold merchandise on layaway with the possibility the merchandise will not be completely paid for/picked up.

This would mean that a massive amount of merchandise (in thousands of stores) would go back out on the selling floor, and sold at a huge loss. In order to recover this huge loss, merchandise prices would increase, and all customers would be effected.

Wal-Mart could consider reinstating layaway if the retail sales figures show a significant decrease in sales directly resulting in the removal of layaway. However, sales data analysis can take many years to determine. Therefore, I would not depend on reinstatement of layaway anytime soon.

YES!! shocking, and upsetting, but its true. i used to work at wal-mart.and some of my friends still do. they want us to instead apply for the wal-mart credit card, and pay it that way, really thought the back used to get full to were it was unwalkable with all the layaway items. and alot of the times, they never get picked up. there is a petition to stop the ban. i dont know how good it will do, but its worth a shot.

(Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will end layaway service this year due to falling demand and rising costs)

I don't know if they already have, but my bank is in there and the last time I went, I saw a sign saying that they were about to get rid of it.
