The most common answer of this question will most likely be that of the unknown. this is because no one really knows why to fear death. Some fear death because it comes too soon and they won't be able to do all they want to before death comes. Others think it may be extremely painful. Some just think there's nothing after death, and don't want to float endlessly into nothingness. Even more may fear death because of the chance Hell may be real and they may be going there. Allot of fears are usually stupid to say the least. To live life in fear of death it irrational. To live in fear keeps you from living in the first place. So it's impossible to tell you why people fear death for it may be different for all of us. I do not fear death, in turn I live my life, and not care about the end when ever it may come. I do not fear what is inevitable, but If i could stop it I would gladly. However impossible it may be. That is my one unreasonably want in life, to live forever. Many want it, but I'm still searching. To fear death would keep me from this. Making it more impossible than it all ready is.

MAN instinctively fears the UNKNOWN; however you want to define it.
If you look at man's evolution, there were tons and tons of things that people were so afraid of because they didn't know how to explain it till one day a man/woman stepped up and found a solution. I.e. discovery of the American continent. None ever dared to cross it, then people called it the darkness beyond the waters till Columbus stepped up, sailed, came back and said "Here is how it looks on the other side."
Death is also one of those unknown factors, it is different however, because there is nobody to return and say "well, here is how the other side looks like". Thus it remains obscure and unknown and that is why we fear it the most.
We know it is a fact that we will all die, we just deliberately ignore it till it comes because we have no control over this matter.

One no-one one knows what happens after we die no-one, fear of the unknown.
Two the natural instinct to stay alive to survive and keep on living,
even if you accept death you still have some fear, how ever small.

Perhaps it is not death that people fear, it is pain! Death is certain, instant, painless death is not a thing to be afraid of!

Because no one can tell you what death is like. No one can tell you how it feels or doesn't feel. It's the great unknown, and it's human nature to fear the unknown.

Because nobody knows what it's like on the other side, and just the thoughts of being put in a casket in the ground under six feet of dirt or having their bodies burned till your nothing but ashes is enough to scare anyone.

Because no one knows if there is anything afterwards, if all they ever were, all they ever did, or thought, said, or tried to accomplish, will be reduced to a name carved on a rock in a big field of many carved rocks that eventually everyone will forget about once those that knew them are under rocks of their own. That all of us are nothing more than leaves on a tree, when the season passes we are gone, nothing left but a memory and the fact we once existed, if anyone cares. And there is always one more mountain to climb, car to own, gal to kiss, drink to try, doughnut to eat, etc. etc.

I don't fear death.
What is fearful is to be alive and live a deadening life
Or to have to live in chronic pain.
Or to live with Alzheimers
But death itself-no fear. Just another adventure.

All that rationalizing is interesting, but it's a total waste of time. We fear death because that is how we express our survival instinct.
It is instinct, nothing more.

People fear death because they fear their inadequacies. They fear that they will not achieve their dreams and right their wrongs.
