As in once Muslim is mention, the image of covered ''oppressed ''women most likely of mideastern origin, turban wearing men, terrorists, extemists conservatives etc etc.
Or do they refer to Muslims as real normal people like them whereby some some fraction of the community are liberals and some conservatives.

It depends.

Those of us who actually know people who are muslims, indeed see that a spectrum exists and that they are normal people.

I believe that these are the majority but I don't know.

Personally, I do have a problem with some conservative islamic values. Wearing the veil or burka (hajib is fine in my view as long as its voluntary), killing people for apostacy (making a faith choice to leave islam), not allowing a woman a say in court (7 woman to counter one man), laws based on peoples religious standing and sex (for example blood money in Saudi Arabia),
stoning rape victims for adultery, beating up women for not covering their head, etc ...

Most of the muslims I personally know don't seem to do these things at all tho. Some of them are conservative by western standards but not by way of imposing on others as much as themselves.

I think a good percentage of the populations sees them as you first described. after 9/11 they were stereotyped.I think it is starting to get better now. We still have a long way to go though,
