Katherine is my great-aunts middle name and Leigh is my Best friend's middle name .

That's another classic! Katherine is fun 'cause she can be cutsie and go by Katie, and as an adult could always use her full first name or use the nickname Kay. Hey, she could even be called Kay-Leigh. Leigh looks and sounds good with Katherine, and I like your reasons for picking the names. :)

Katherine sounds too old and my cousin's name is Catherine but she goes by Cathy and she is arrogant and materialistic. I also knew a Katherine in school and she was a nerd and took things seriously.
I would go with Katelyn, Katrina or Katarina. These sound younger and more beautiful than Katherine.
Leigh is too plain. How about LeeAnn, Lydia or Linnea?
