Try any of these artists:
Shania Twain (mostly upbeat and not at all country sounding...she's more of a cross-over artist)
Carrie Underwood
Martina McBride (her voice is breathtaking!)
Sugarland (new CD just released this past Tuesday)
Keith Urban
Tim McGraw (I personally like his older stuff off of the first "Greatest Hits" CD)
Kenny Chesney
Montgomery Gentry
Brad Paisley
Dierks Bently
Toby Keith
Terri Clark (I love her greatest hits CD)
Trick Pony
Alan Jackson (he's pretty "old school" country though)

You will run across sad songs no matter what genre you pick. I grew up on 60/70 rock and continued into the 80's. Some to check out: Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Sara Evans, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Keith Anderson, ....
Find a country radio station and listen for a while, you will start to find artists with styles you like.

you have a lot of good suggestions here.
You may also enjoy Confederate RailRoad,Hal Ketchum,Pirates of the Mississippi, TRAVIS TRITT, Chris Ledeaux( Pronounced La-Dew: He had a lot of good story songs)
Eric Heatherly
Gram Parsons (not really country, but a folksy, traditional sound that inspired a generation of country artists, He died in the early 70's)
Anything Merle Haggard, He is still active
George Jones is a great bridge between old country and current country trends. (He started playing in the 50's and is still active)
One of my all time favorite artists is Don Williams, but he is semi-retired as I understand it
Anything Waylon Jennings
Everything that I have heard of Shooter Jennings so far (Waylon's son)
A new group called (The) Wreckers
Trick Pony
Road Hammers
Daryll Whorly!!!
Alan Jackson
and last but not least by any measure
Van Zant (if you like VZ, you will like Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Check out Allmusic.com for information on any of these names.

You might like some of LeAnn Rimes's later songs, or maybe Carrie Underwood. They are sort of trendy these days. There's also Alison Krauss, Rascal Flatts, Lee Ann Womack (if you like songs with a moral, her song "I Hope You Dance" is a good one), Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw (his later songs).

I would go straight for the 90's country... country music now isn't as good as it was before... also try loretta lynn's cd: van lear rose, and johnny cash's cd american iv: the man comes around. Both of these CDs are awesome.
