We just did a sleep study in my nursing class. Apparently, insomnia can be caused by too much protein intake but carbohydrates are known to stimulate sleep. People with hypothyrodism suffer from lack of NREM sleep. Researchers also found that psychological stress which decreases REM amount, lifestyles (such as continuous shift change from night to day and vise versa), diet, exercise (never exercise 2 hours before bed time), alcohol, caffiene, nicotine, illness, environmental factors, and certain meds can disturb your sleep cycle.
It sounds like you do manage to fall asleep but you wake up often. You are not getting into the REM phase of your sleep (deep sleep). Without this phase, you will experience anxiety and irritability. Sedatives are sometimes recommended for insomnia but should be used for a relatively short period of time. These drugs usually give people a hangover effect in the morning. I would recommend that you seek the help of your doctor to perhaps refer you to a sleep specialist. Most doctors prescribe sedatives for those complaining of insomnia. You can try to get sedatives on your own. If they don't work or you become dependent on them or are experiencing side effects, you should bring this up to your physician and have a referral to a sleep specialist.
p.s. be careful not to consume too much beverage at night as it can wake you up because you have to void alot. Tea contains caffiene which will defeat your purpose.

Studies show that DMAE can elevate mood and promote more restful sleep, as well as help increase mental focus, clarity of thought and muscle tone.
The secret is DMAE's ability to promote the formation of acetylcholine, an important brain neurotransmitter.
Your mind is the first part of your body to show signs of a nutritional deficiency.
Take a good Multi-Vitamin and Mineral supplement, plus Omega 3 oils. All proven to enhance mental acuity.
A 'Chemical Imbalance' is a mineral imbalance, which is a 'Mineral Deficiency'.

Sleep Quotes to inspire you tonight:
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
Edgar Allan Poe
-------------------
Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more!
Macbeth does murder sleep,’ the innocent sleep,
Sleep that knits up the raveled sleeve of care.
William Shakespeare

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Melatonin is a good natural sleep aid. It is available at GNC and other vitamin shops. It doesn't leave you groggy the next day like a lot of prescriptions do.

Warm milk does help. You could also try straight chamomile tea or sleepy time tea. Valerian root helps some people. If you drink beverages with caffeine try cutting them out or not drinking them after say noon or three pm.

When I first talked to my doctor about having trouble sleeping he would tell me that a warm glass of milk would do the trick. You can give that a go. It worked in the short term for me but now I take ambien since he now says that I suffer from insomnia....(ughhh!!)

I have used meletonin and valerian root. Both seem to work well. My aunt said taking a warm ginger bath helps her to relax and sleep.
