He is overrated.

He was young and handsome, had a glamorous wife, gave good speeches and was killed in office.

Much of the legend is built on emotion.

JFK was young, rich and a war hero. A published author and Pulitizer Prize winner for his book, Profiles in Courage. What he did in office was revitalize the instiution of the office of the President of the United States. He brought respect, youth and vitality back to America. He made America proud and when he made a bad decision, such as the Bay of Pigs, he owned up to the blame and did not push the blame onto others. He was not afraid to stand up to his own military advisors and disagree. He understood along with his brother Bobby, the importance and need to change America at her roots. Civil Rights was important, and he took a stand for the black American. He had the brains to get America out of the Cuban Missle Crisis which was created by the Soviets, and gave them an out. He understood the terror to the Nuclear Arsenol at his disposal, and desired not to use them. He was young, chaismatic, had a beautiful wife, beautiful children, and along with his brother Bobby, did not fear making a decision. Ultimately, these virutes would lead to the death of both men. He died tragically, publicallly and young. A life and a mission unfinished. We all ask what America would be like had either brother lived. Many of his accomplishments have been overshadowed by his assassination. Only now are historians of a different generation being able to evaluate his presidency without emotional attachment to "what was" or "what could have been". It is difficult to judge the accomplishments of a Presidency of 1000 days. Judge the man for his record before becoming President, and for what he said as he toured the world. America has not had such popularity since he stood at the Berlin Wall and said, "Ich Bein ein Berliner". As a Canadian, I urge you to pick up a book and read about the man and politics of his administratin. Disregard all the sordid details about his personal life. And you will discover someone of eloquence, wit, patience and ideas unique to the office to which he was elected.
