From my experience, dealing with your employees properly is one of the best things you can do. You don't have to be their buddy (and you shouldn't be), but if you can show your employees the respect they deserve, they will be far more likely to work well for you. I have seen many employees go into lazy mode for a nasty manager who treated them as "hired help" and no better.

Be patient
Be understanding
Ask, don't demand
Encourage, not discourage
Be polite and use manners, please and thank you will go a long way
Be a positive personality they can respect
Never address issues in front of others, employees or customers alike

Basically, try to treat them with the respect they deserve and always be tactful if you need to address an issue. If you are able to show them respect, they will do the same for you.

For other aspects... always wear a smile, even if you don't feel like it. Take pride in everything you do. Share any ideas you have for your company.

Good Luck!

You can't be effective, it is impossible. the corporation you work for only cares about the bottom line. You must serve food in one minute or less, even though the food takes 4 minutes to cook. If you have a drive through, the "fast track" computer times you, and you (the manager) will get blamed for orders that take more than a minute, even though the customer is talking on their cell phones, or counting out pennies, or adding additional orders once they reach the window!
Oh yeah, you have teenagers working for you that will say "I'm not doing that for 5.25 an hour", even though they agreed to accept the job for that pay rate.

Don't constantly hang over employees shoulders glaring at them all the time.Don't look for nickpicky things like a little smug here or there using the word dude and stuff to call them into your office for.Work side by side with them get your hands dirty once and a while if you suspect wrongdoing to see for yourself instead of third party information alone as a short cut.

read a book called "gung ho" i dont know the author though
also treat your team like they are your family
when it is a birthday buy a cake or do what my team does and everyone bring a dish to pass so that on thier b-day they dont have to eat the restaurant food.
have baby showers
work as hard if not harder than they do, but expect them to work as hard as you too, they will respect you more
dont let them see you slack then they will slack too

make sure you have enough staff to cover the busy periods so that you can be a visable active manager and be able to handle situations and not jepardize service.
