you add and subtract mixed numbers in parts. the whole number is one part, the fraction another. fractions can only be added and subtracted if they have like denominaters. so 2/3 would become 4/6 so that 1/6 could be subtracted from it. then just add or subtract the whole numbers.
for multiplying and diving mixed numbers it is necessary to convert all numbers into fractions. so 1 2/3 x 3/4 would become 5/3 x 3/4. then just multipy across. however, when dividing, you flip the second number and then multiply it.

rules for adding and subtracting fractions:
MUST have common denominators
7 2/5 + 6 2/3
change 2/5 to 6/15 (by multiplying top and bottom by 3/3)
change 2/3 to 10/15 (by multiplying top and bottom by 5/5)
now add:
7 6/15 + 6 10/15
7 + 6 = 13
6/15 + 10/15 = 16/15 ( you can change that into 1 and 1/15)
add the one to the the whole number (13) to get 14
final answer = 14 and 1/15
same goes for subtracting
6 2/3 - 1 1/6
change 2/3 to 4/6 (by multiplying top and bottom by 2/2)
1/6 does not need to be changed
so...
6 4/6 - 1 1/6
6-1 = 5
4/6 - 1/6 = 3/6
final answer = 5 and 3/6 or 5 and 1/2
when multiplying or dividing mixed numbers you MUST first change the mixed numbers into improper fractions
1 2/3 should be 5/3 (short cut to find improper fraction is to multiply bottom number with whole number and add the top number : 3 X 1 + 2 = 5; and put that number on top of the denominator (3)
5/3 * 3/4 = 15/12 or 5/4 (divide top and bottom by 3/3)
final answer = 5/4
dividing mixed numbers:
change mixed number into improper fraction
1 1/2 divided by 1/3
3/2 divided by 1/3
then you must invert and multiply the second fraction
3/2 * 3/1 = 9/2
final answer = 9/2

In all cases you must place all the numbers under a common denominator and in simple fraction form: example 6 2/3 = 20/3, 1 1/6 = 7/6 6 will be common denominator, so 20/3 = 40/6 and this can be added to 7/6 to get 47/6 =7 5/6

first simplify the mixed number to a proper fraction
so for 1 2/3 multiply 3 with 1 and add the product with 2
the result u get is the numerator and denoinator is 3 in this case
so fraction u get is 5/3
similarly 6 3/8 means u multiply 8 with 6 and add 3 to the product....so u get the numerator
denominator here is 8
so fraction is 51/8
find the equivalent of the fraction in decimal points by dividing the numerator with the denominator
then u will easily b able to do the different operations u want to do

first u solve 7 2/5 that will be 7*5+2=37/5
then 6 2/3 =6*3+2=20/3so now
37/5+20/3=?
take L.C.M as 15 bcz 3 and 5 both are prime no.s
so now the answer is 211/15. simple
now in subtracting
20/3-7/6
taking L.C.M 6 bcz 6 is a multiple of 3...
so the answer is 40/6-7/6==33/6...
now multiplying
5/3*3/4=15/12=5/4(cutting since 15&12 both are multiples of 3)
now for dividing :-
3/2 divided by 1/3
we will reciprocal 1/3 and now it will be 3/2 *3/1=9/2
i hope my explanation becomes useful 4 u

For adding or subtracting mixed numbers, find a common denominator and make equivalent fractions. Then add or subtract the numerators and bring down the denominator. (If subtraction is not possible, borrow a one from the top whole number and add it to the top fraction). Then add or subtract the whole numbers. Simplify and change if improper.
To multiply or divide mixed numbers, change them into improper fractions. (Whole number X denominator + numerator = new numerator, keep denominator).
Then, for multiplying- multiply the numerators. That is your new numerator. Then multiply the denominator. That's your new denominator. Then simplify and change if improper.
For dividing, flip the second fraction. Then multiply as above.

adding and subtracing you need a common denominator. multiplying you just multiply through, and diving you turn one number upside down and then multiply through (dividing is multiplying the reciprocal)
