To understand another requires both listening and giving of yourself. There are basically three types of personalities. Those who want to dominate, those who want to follow the leader, and those who want to converse. To understand others you need to converse. Avoid the "Dominate or Be Dominated" trap. If the other insists on this state your point quietly and politely break off the conversation, which was not a conversation as there was no
"co-" in it. If the other is a follower he or she wants to learn and a conversation is possible. The two individuals who have the most success at understanding one another are those who converse as equals even though they are not equals by other criteria.

Take a good honest look at yourself. You know how people get crazy when someone makes a driving error, we've all at one point or another done the same thing but we don't see it for what it is, usually just a mistake, until we do it ourselves. Then a big window opens up, geez, it wasn't like I cut you off on purpose, I wasn't thinking. Same with losing your temper, being impatient, we all do it. It's only when we get it blown up in front of us do we realize we do it too, sometimes it's ugly and sometimes it just happens. As a species we're pretty self centered, me that's who'se important, and you are. But once you are willing to see yourself as you are, then you can start to accept others too.
You have to understand yourself first.

First step is listen to what they say, later on you may be able to ask questions as long as you can do it in a non-confronting way.

There is no way to completely understand other people. Protect yourself first, and if you must interact with other people, do so as if you were conducting business deals.
