I pour dawn dish soap on them and rub until it gets real soapy then rinse. Sometimes I throw mine in the dishwasher where the utensils go.. Bleach will eat the sponge up faster!!

Sponges are a disposable item meant to be replaced often. Dish wash clothes are a better alternative as they can just be thrown in the washing machine. Sponges are also a breeding ground for germs and bacteria which I think has already been stated and is definately a true statement. Sponges soak up everything, the good and the bad.

Sponges are nasty...but, if you are attached to it...try this...
put your favorite sponge soaking wet into the microwave and zap it for a couple of minutes. It will be very HOT. Then the cool thing to do after that, (once the sponge is cooled down) the microwave will be easy to clean...due to all the moisture inside. After all, you really need to clean all that stuck-on food and sauce splatter off the walls and such. And to make it fun...add a small drop of dish soap...it bubbles...and grows more bubbles. Small amusement for free. Just like nuking marshmallows. Oh, yeah...very important, no matter what you use...make sure to put it where it can dry out between uses.

The secret is to throw it away!! Sponges are SO yucky - that stink is germs/bacteria!!!

A better alternative is a scrubby bristle brush that won't absorb the germs and rinses out.

Either way - sponge or brush - put it on the top rack of the dishwasher and run it through a cycle with HOT HOT water. Or Soak it in bleach and hot water in the sink.

Ewww. I know what you are talking about!
1) Look for antimicrobial sponges. They usually say something like resists bacterial odors.
2) Rinse and dry your sponge each time. Use soapy water then rinse under hot water. Press down to squeeze the water out and leave it a place which is airy.

3) Place sponge in microwave for a few minutes. When you do this you want a wet sponge that you cleaned.

4) throw them in the dishwasher after rinsing them soap. Squeeze hard before placing them in though.

Add A little bleach or Lysol to the final lot of dishwater & rinse it well. The pores of the sponge traps material & over time it starts to decay. Any antibacterial will work but the real secret is to rinse the sponge thoroughly after each use.

When my kitchen sponge gets dirty I just pour bleach and water over it for a few seconds then rinse it really good with clear water. It works great!

I use sponges all the time and have found that if you don't rinse them good and let them dry completely that they get really nasty. I've thrown mine in the washer and then dried them. But in the end it's just alot easier to just buy a new one.

You shouldn't use sponges. They are a breeding ground for all sorts of nasty stuff and bacteria. Then you take them and smear all those germs around when you "clean" something. Switch to dishrags that can be switched out daily and washed with bleach.

When doing dishes put the sponge in the dish washer or wash out with soapy water after every use. keeps them clean and smelling nice.
