This guy went for 40-40-40 last year an consistantly hit for 35 homeruns 100 plus RBI's and over 30 steals a season. I think if we can add a pitcher or two we can contend next season.

Soriano will make a difference in that club, Good move on the Cubbies part, and I'm a die hard White Sox fan.

Offense isn't the big problem with the Cubs.

Signing Soriano and NOT getting alot of pitching will be purely as a fan draw. Soriano insists on playing 2nd base. If the Cubs sign Soriano that pushes out a promising young 2nd baseman. In addition it reduces defense as Soriano is a defensive liability. On the plus side Soriano will hit 50 HRs in Wrigly and be moved to 2nd or 3rd in the line up.

In my opinion the Cubs need to dump guys like Lee, Jones and Barret if they want to be competitive. Barret is a defensive liability and doesn't hit well enough to make up for his defensive lacks. Lee is either a steroid bust waiting to happen or a total fluke. Jones is a place holder kind of guy now.

Pitching is crucial. The Cubs rotation is a disaster. The relief core almost as bad. No matter how many hitters the Cubs add they are not going to win games until they address pitching and defense. Last the Cubs need a team leader. Somebody to spark the team.

As for Sorianno in general. He's a good fit for the current team. He KOs way too often but in Wrigley that's not a big deal. The Cubs put up with Sosa's 150+ KOs for years. Sorianno is a much better hitter than Sosa ever was. Sorianno hits for average, hits doubles and triples and can steal bases. All things Sosa couldn't or wouldn't do most of his career.

That is a lot of money for a 30 year old. What is going to happen when he is 32 or 35. Can he be a 40 40 man again. The Cubs have got to do it this year.

Waste of money for the Cubs: they will not be a good team in the next eight years.

Waste of time for Soriano: Going to spend the next eight years on a losing team.

I think that it could really boost their power at bat, and if they play him on second and not in the outfield it could boost their defense. Let's face it though, where they really need help is within their pitching staff. It takes a solid stable to make it to the big one and win it. Ask the Cardinals.
