I have heard this too, I was told that putting them in the dishwasher subjects them to too much heat and that changes the temper of the steel and allows the blade to dull more quickly. They also said that they can get knocked into other utensils and damage the edge. However, I place my good knives in the dishwasher on their side on the top rack and nothing has ever happened to them and they still cut going on 7 years now.

Knives become dull mostly from rubbing together & getting small knicks along the cutting surface. The dishwasher should have no adverse effects other than rubbing together with the other cutlery in the basket. Knife sets like "Wiltshire" have become popular because the cutting edges are honed everytime they are removed from their holders. They wear a little faster but always remain sharp. If the knives you have purchased do not have serated edges you can keep the edge on them with a shapening steel. The best way to keep your knives sharp regardless of type is to hand wash them. Takes a wee bit longer but they're ready when you need them.

I really doubt putting them in the dishwasher would dull them. I have bought some pretty good knives and they always say that they are dishwasher safe. I think if the dishwasher dulled them it would be stated on the package the knives come in.

yes, the dishwasher dulls knives!!
wash them by hand, and if you don't have a knife block, put the blade in an envelope to keep from bumping it on other utensils, and your fingers in a drawer

The only reason you dont put them in the dishwasher is because the water jets bang them around. If you could find a way to secure them you should be ok.

I don`t think it hurts the knives but I always hand wash mine only because its dangerous when you are putting the dishes and utensils away...You could be cut by your own knife!Ouch*
