Hello:
I also live in the midwest, and I would say set it at about 60 degrees. If you are going to be leaving very soon, than you house will be empty during the coldest months in the midwest (December and January) where there is a lot of snow and very cold - as I'm sure you know.
Since it freezes most nights during those months, the most important thing to consider is keeping your pipes from freezing. That could cause serious damage and be very costly.
I would also consider asking a neighbor to keep any sidewalks shoveled, you could get fined if you don't. Also have a neighbor watch over your house - if we get a heavy snowfall, you might need a neighbor to brush off your roof.
I hope this helps, good luck, and have a good trip.

I would say about 50-55 degrees because the house probably will cool down and stay to about 57-58 degrees so just incase it drops below that it will turn on and heat up your house and keep it from freezing or anything else bad.

It depends on where in the midwest and what you have in the house. This winter is supposed to be fairly mild (we haven't gotten any snow up here in Minneapolis yet), so I would say about 50-60 degrees.

The idea is to keep your pipes from freezing I take it? Any temp above freezing, unless you have plants that need to stay warm. But, if you're going to be gone almost 2 months, why not just have the water turned off so you don't have to pay for heating when you're not there?

55 deg may be feasible. have a neighbor check out the temp and get the mail. 7 weeks is a long time for mail and papers to accumulate.

We've done this in Minnesota and the lake cabins in our area. We and they, all get good results with 55 to 60 degrees.

62 or below, don't turn it off though b/c your pipes may freeze. If you have animals, you should keep it about 70 or 72
