My neighbors had to move due to a mold problem in their apartment. They don't have a mattress because it was covered in mold also. Then lost pretty much all of their furniture. The apartment complex gave them room and board in a hotel for 5 days, the complex moved what furniture they could, left their mattresses and couch because it was covered. The complex gave them $400 to replace what they could. Now we all know that is not enough to replace a queen size, a king size bedroom, a couch and love seat. They also can't get the heat turned on yet because they still owe for last year. Was I wrong not to offer my extra room to them? There are no children.

No. The building problems aren't YOUR problems. You shouldn't have to give up a room in your apartment for another tenant because of something like that. The landlord has a responsibility to make sure a tenant is covered when there are problems in a building. Not you. You could offer out of generosity, but it isn't your fault or responsibility. Don't give it another thought.

No, you were not wrong.

When I was living alone, I could not have survived with someone else living in my space. My apartment was where I went for sanctuary. I could have put up with houseguests for a few days - but not much longer and in your situation it sounds like you couldn't be absolutely sure when they would be leaving. With a set deadline that you could definitely live with, you shouldn't feel badly that you didn't ask them to stay with you.

My response would only be for people I knew really, really well. If I didn't know them realy well - for a long period of time - then there is NO WAY that I would allow someone else to come and go freely where I live.

If they are really close friends then you should offer it. You never know... you could be the one up to your ears in mold one day and need a place.

If it was your close friend I would say maybe you were wrong, but just a neighbor? No, I wouldn't have offered.

Not unless you were close to them. They can take the owners to small claims court to collect more and to pay for motel costs. $400. is not nearly enough.

They have 5 days paid for by someone else, then they can come and stay with you if they have no where else to go.
