I am moving next week to a town outside of Chicago and need to get my 2 cats to Chicago safely by air if possible to minimize there discomfort.

Good question. I have researched moving cats from L.A. to Michigan which we may do in a year or two.

Most airlines will only, if at all, allow the cats in carriers in the "luggage" hold and I WILL NOT DO THAT.

I've heard too many horror stories of damaged carriers, pets lost, hurt etc...

If I cannot take them in airline approved carriers on board with me, by my feet (where my carry-one goes) I'm not flying them.

Perhaps by rail or something would be a choice.

My husband & I talked about driving a "winnebago" cross country to see the "world" and have the cats with us. They only have to get used to one big vehicle. Yes, we have to stop & park for about 5 nights, but after seeing how our big "brave" male didn't like a hotel the nights we had our house fumigated, I'm not putting him through that again. None of us got any sleep. Too many doors slamming.

You can rent winnebagos one way cross country. Yes, it's expensive, but that's what we'll have to do. Hotels, 2 airfares and delays in airports, planes that get hot or hit by weather, nope. A winnebago sounds good to me!

The best way is a carrier, but it would be wise to travel with them on a bus or train if you have a carrier that looks like a duffel bag with a mesh screen you can carry those on the plane, but it would have to sit on the floor by your feet so you can watch them and unzip the side panels so they can get air. It would be better to contact all airline carriers, greyhound, and amtrak on how to safely ship a pet so they can be transfered without much difficulty. They should be able to tell you by FAA regulation of how to ship 2 cats together.
