Magicians have used a very thin black thread to perform the trick. The thread is folded up in the bill so the bill can be suspended by the thread. The camera can not pick up the thread, and if the magician wears black, the thread blends in with the back ground. If the trick is performed in front of the camera, then the thread can dangle from the ceiling or something suspended out of camera range. When it is performed on stage, one end of the thread is attached to the clothing of the magician. The tread runs from the clothing, over the top of the magicians hand, (thumb in this instance) and to the bill. With practice, the thread can be switched from one hand to another. The camera has no depth perception. Waving your hand in circles between the camera and the bill gives the impression there is no suspension of the bill.
