I am a patron who tips 15% of my bill to a server who gives me adequate service. If he or she goes above and beyond the call of duty, I up the tip. As inflation and minimum wage rise, so does the price of the food and so does the 15% for the price of the same food. I waited tables for 10 years and found this out: in general (not every day and there are always jerks who could care less about tipping you appropriately...) the harder I worked, the more I brought home at the end of the night. Attitude is everything.

because a tip is not a required thing that you are supposed to get. That is what most people in the service industry forget. You are not entitled to a tip, you have to earn it. If the service is just ok the 15 is more than adequate, I know I have left 2 cents on the table when the service was terrible. A tip is not owed to you, you have to deserve it, work for it, then maybe you will get the 20% or more that I leave for great wait staff. I was a waitress once. like i said the tip is not part of your wages it is something you earn, and a percentage is just that, and the amount of money will go up as the prices go up.

The tip has nothing to do with the minimum wages dear heart. It is something that the customer leaves for good service. Most people do leave more. I was working for many years for minimum wages and never complained about what people were generous enough to leave me. I believe taxes are generally the same amount one leaves for the service, which in reality makes it 30 percent added to the cost of a meal. People tend to leave less if the service has been lousy! That is their decision and a person with a smile always gets what she deserves at the end.

No. Raising minimum wage means the general populace has less to spend because for ever dollar additional spent on wages, businesses will raise prices enough to cover at least double that amount. As the price of the meal increases to cover the higher wages, the 15% goes up automatically.
With service the way it is some places, 15% is WAY too much.

The price of meals at a restaurant goes up from time to time thus giving the waiter/waitress more money from the same 15% tip. Minimum wage has no correlation to tips.

The tip would go up as the prices of the food you are eating goes up. Makes sense right? I personally believe that the price of food in most restaurants today are outrageously high, but good service deserves a good tip. I don't believe in leaving more than 10% for a waiter/waitress who was terrible. I totally base the amount on the service, if I am thoroughly dissatified, I don't leave a tip at all. But on the other hand, I have left tips bigger than the check. It all depends on the service!

No. The tip is determined by the size of one's bill, not minimum wage. And the cost of those meals is going up faster than minimum wage, therefore, the tips are going up with the cost of the meals.

Consider the fact that the minimum wage hasn't budged in 10 yrs.
Consider the cost of your average (Fine Dining) meal.
And consider the level of Service.
I have worked Back of the House, and Front. My kid is a Chef.
Stop whining and start educating yourselves about the people you Vote for. Think twice.
Then, things will get better again.

I only tip 10% and maybe more if the service was really good. I don't see why a person has to pay soooo much for eating in a restaurant and then have to pay even more for somebody to bring you the food. I think service charges should be included in food prices.

minimum wage goes up because of inflation. inflation means things cost more. if two years ago something cost 10 dollars and now it costs 15, even if the percentage stays the same at 15%, 15% of 15 is more than 15% of ten. so even if the tipping percentage stays the same, youre making more money because prices are rising.
