I'm going to Amsterdam at the end of the year, and I'd like to go skiing. Is there any skiing close by, or should I rail to Germany, France, or other? Can I take a bus/train to a ski mountain? Can I rent skis? I'm American :)

The Netherlands is flat, flat, flat. No skiing anywhere near Amsterdam. So yeah, you'll have to travel to Germany or France (or Austria or Switzerland). There are organised bus tours, but that wouldn't be my 1st choice. I have added the link for the Dutch railways, which for some sick reason is only in Dutch.

I'm sorry, some of the people above think they know the Netherlands... :-S. Of course you can ski in the Netherlands! You only have to do it indoor and this is not the best way of skiing because (I think) it gets boring quite easily. Check out: http://www.snowworld.nl/snowworld.htm or (where I have been, but this is much smaller): http://www.snowplanet.nl/
Snowplanet is not that far from Amsterdam. Unfortunately the site from Snowplanet is only in Dutch...(other one also available in English).
No mountains in the Netherlands (highest point is about 1000 feet). The nearest ski possibility is probably the Ardennes.

Of course you can ski in Amsterdam! The Dutch built much of the country by creating land where there was previously ocean, so of course their skiers won't be deterred by living in a place that's flat and below sea level:

whoa, I guess you did not do your homework about Amsterdam, or the rest of our country!!

We are the flattest country on this planet!!!

Austria and Switzerland are good for skiing, and you will find many Dutch people there............

You can go there by train or coach, plenty of travel agents in Amsterdam that can sell you the trip for a reasonable price.

Skiing in Amsterdam................lmao...........

Hehe, no mountains in Holland to speak out (the Dutch seem to think there are some down south, but these are really just hills). However, there are some indoor skiing places...try googling these. But, for an authentic skiing experience, I'd head for the Alps.

Wotcha Squidgy............the only skiing you could do is water skiing on the canals !

The closest place for you to go skiing from Amsterdam is to the French / Italian Alps.
