It was a really old and weird show about a guy who is trapped someplace and is always trying to escape and somehow when he is about to do it a black balloon like sphere grabs him and takes him back. I never got to know if he managed to escape or not...

I can't remember which, but it is one of the two.
And no - The Sentinel is not the one with the character named Jarod - this is the show that the modern version of The Sentinel is based upon...
